The Open Culture Foundation is a nonprofit organisation that advocates open technology and fosters an open, secure, inclusive, and participatory digital civil society. Founded by active local communities, OCF has been vital in promoting open technology across the public and private sectors. In addition, it has been deeply involved in policy advocacy over the past few years, laying a solid foundation for the development of open technology in Taiwan. OCF’s commitment to co-creation is not just a principle it champions but a practice it follows. This is evident in the evolution of its visual identity, which has been shaped over the years by its members' contributions. The need for a more flexible, cohesive, and distinctive identity system was identified. At the project’s outset, we engaged in in-depth discussions with all OCF members to distil their ideas and vision. These insights, crystallised into core values and critical concepts, laid the groundwork for creating a new visual identity, making it a truly collaborative effort.
The new visual language is centred on a bold, striking shade of purple. This colour ambiguously sits between red and blue, symbolising OCF’s involvement in often-overlooked and undefined areas. The synthetic quality of the hue underscores the organisation's close ties to the digital realm. The logotype was designed as an element, drawing inspiration from the principal visual of code editors. Its slab-serif typography and the use of an underscore echo the visual cues of coding environments, with the underscore symbolising openness and an invitation to participate. A range of corner details, alternative logos, supplementary colours, and flexible elements were also developed to reinforce the identity’s consistency and adaptability further, ensuring that it can evolve with the changing digital landscape.
In alignment with OCF’s long-term vision, every aspect of the project—from the choice of typefaces to the file formats used for the identity guidelines—was editable with open-source tools, thus lowering the barriers for potential collaborators. Overall, the vivid colour palette, bold type, and clear visual presentation breathe new life into OCF’s brand. Balancing playfulness with rigour, this refreshed identity positions OCF to lead into the next decade with renewed energy.
